ABSTRACT

WITH REGARD TO SOCIAL WORK, AISHA’S SITUATION RAISES manyethical, practical, and philosophical questions. Some of these questions relate to Aisha’s adjustment and well-being as a new family member. Others involve the adjustment of the family as they attempt to accommodate a new member. Still other questions focus on the utility of institutions such as family, religion, adoption, and foster care and how institutions support or undermine individual functioning and the integrity of cultural diversity and ethnic differences. To look for answers to some of these broad philosophical questions, social workers often turn to sociological, feminist, and cultural theories to conceptualize larger social issues.
