ABSTRACT

THIS SCENARIO RAISES MANY ETHICAL AND PRACTICE ISSUES ON severaldifferent levels. As in previous chapters, imagine that you are the social worker who is helping Josie. You and Josie have many decisions to make, and you must possess not only sound practice skills but also solid knowledge about human development; sensitivity to cultural issues; awareness of your own values and beliefs concerning teen pregnancy, adoption, and abortion; and up-to-date information on legal and ethical issues surrounding working with minors. This chapter explores human development from conception to birth, along with some of the issues, such as those just stated, that may present themselves when working with clients who are pregnant or who have recently given birth.
