ABSTRACT

AS WITH DEVELOPMENT IN THE FETUS, WE SEE RAPID DEVELOPMENT ininfants and young children. Many parents are amazed (and sometimes disheartened!) to see how quickly their children develop motor, language, cognitive, and other skills and how rapidly they become assertive individuals who verbalize their needs and wishes. Indeed, development in young childhood takes place so quickly that many parents are taken by surprise at how their children seem to change overnight. These rapid developments can also be a source of stress for parents if they think that their children are not developing “normally” or keeping pace with other children in the same age range.
