ABSTRACT

In this section, we will look at glands generally accepted as part of the endocrine system. We will also be describing organs and structures not normally considered endocrine glands. The reason for this is twofold. First, target tissues that can profoundly affect the glands control many of the mechanisms of the endocrine system. Second, nearly every endocrine text, new and old, contains references to interactions between the endocrines and other organs and tissues. We will, therefore, address some of these issues. Each gland chapter gives general information about that gland with all

chapters having similar subheadings. These chapters are not exhaustive for each gland but rather an introduction to the structure and function that the interested practitioner may use as an initial foray into new areas of research.
