ABSTRACT

Cortisol (Compound F, Hydrocortisone) Cortisol is the major corticosteroid produced by the adrenal gland. It is reversibly converted to cortisone. ACTH controls cortisol production. Urine cortisol levels are very elevated in Cushing’s disease. Estrogens, Hyperthyroidism, ACTH, and Corticotropin Releasing Hormone stimulate cortisol levels. Cortisol is suppressed by chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, starvation, and Dexamethasone.
