ABSTRACT
Those attending a ritual occasion may see it as anything from a boring obligation to a life-preserving necessity. In this chapter we ask about individuals’ motivation in participating in ritual activities. Does their involvement result from any of the propensities which we have suggested to be important for religious belief ? Are there other issues involved? How is the motivation to participate linked to the consequences of performance? These are all questions about which generalisations are inevitably speculative.
