ABSTRACT

Firmly established in the popular press and within the halls of academia was Stella Adler’s stature as the Grande Dame of American actortraining. No current article or biographical account on Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, or modern acting in general has failed to mention her half-century contribution, engaging personality, study with Stanislavsky in Paris, or public quarrels with Actor Studio-like preparations. More than any of her contemporaries, Adler was accorded the enviable role as the nation’s Counter-Strasberg.
