ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the initial results of a survey of attitudes of French Gaullist and Centrist parliamentarians towards European integration, following the University of Sheffield/ESRC Conservative Parliamentarians and European Integration survey. Based on the same hypotheses, the survey observes the extent of potential Gaullist Euro-rebellion and confirms the strength of confederal attitudes within the Centrist party, in spite of both leaders' efforts to smooth out divergent attitudes. The results are examined here in respect to the questions of national sovereignty, economic and social xviissues, and institutional issues. The results stress the divisions on Europe within the governing majority and suggest future difficulties for the French government.
