ABSTRACT

Social workers working with adults may ponder what the concept of social exclusion adds to their work. Since the people they work with – those with disability, mental health problems or in old age – are already widely recognised as socially excluded they may wonder what further light the concept of social exclusion casts on their work. In fact a practice focused on exclusion highlights new approaches such as paying attention to social networks, engaging citizens in planning and maximising income. Such a practice, as with other user groups, also underscores the importance of preventive work and the vital role that neighbourhoods and communities play in securing outcomes.
