ABSTRACT

Architectural education has been mentioned previously in this book as one of

the reasons for architects’ lack of skills and interest in promoting participation

in the design process. Within the UK, two institutions have been identified

which include user participation in their architecture curricula and have

developed innovative ways of involving their students and staff in participatory

design. The case studies presented in this chapter look at the experience of

these institutions – the Department of Architecture and Spatial Design at the

London Metropolitan University and the School of Architecture at the University

of Sheffield – to examine how they approach the subject and how successful

they have been.
