ABSTRACT

Women accounted for about 3 percent of all military personnel in World War II, a proportion only a few points higher than in World War I. But the number of women who served in World War II—nearly 400,000—was more than 10 times greater. Furthermore, many more women served overseas and they performed many more varied tasks.
