ABSTRACT

Sarah, the mother of Ricky who was picked up by the Rathbone charity while robbing a car in Collyhurst, went to the same school as my Granny, Mary Bentley. In the years before the First World War, part of the pleasure of attending Manchester Central High School for Girls was being able to travel the mile or so into town on the electric tram that ran past Granny’s house in Ashton New Road, Clayton. But the greatest joy of it was the books.
