The day Elvige took me to meet her mentor, Lisa, she had been speaking about gun-and-knife crime at an event hosted by Boris Johnson. “Your new best friend,” Lisa joked, and they both laughed. Elvige was a peer outreach worker for the Mayor’s office, and Johnson had recently taken over from Ken Livingstone as Mayor of London.
