ABSTRACT
The development of higher education and science in Europe has been influenced by two major initiatives in recent years: the Bologna process, leading to the creation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the Lisbon Strategy, aiming at building the European Research Area (ERA). Both initiatives have had a significant impact on doctoral education that is seen as the bridge between the two processes.
