ABSTRACT

Runner: Our next presenter is Dr. Annie Smith. Annie is a faculty member at Grande Prairie Regional College in Canada and received her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at UBC in 2006. Her research interests encompass community rituals, participatory performance, and her “fledgling” theory of elasticity. She is creating a new field called “participatory performance and pedagogy.” Her dissertation is titled, “Elasticity, Community, and Hope: Understandings from Participatory Theatre Performance.” Annie’s teaching and research is informed by the Indigenous understanding of the relationship of all beings to each other. She worked on the reserve at Itattsoo and was trained by the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council in child protection and community development. “Even though I am non-native, I have taken the teachings I was given as a foundation for how I try to live in the world and how I work as an educator. I hope that I can be understood to be an ally and not an appropriator.” She is an aspiring author and she presents often. Annie, welcome!
