ABSTRACT

If a primary school is serious about ‘supporting’ and ‘nurturing’ children’s emotional needs, it has a counselling service available for pupils and their parents to refer themselves, special drama workshops to prepare them and their parents for the transition to secondary school, perhaps supported by older pupils trained as ‘angels’, a ‘chill-out’ room for disruptive pupils, massage and relaxation classes for staff and pupils, a health week where all school work, special events and visiting speakers focus on physical and mental health, and a nurture group where children diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) can be withdrawn for therapeutic activities.
