ABSTRACT

The nominal scale of measurement is used to describe data comprising simply names or categories (hence another name for this level of measurement: categorical). Thus, the answer to the question Do you live in university accommodation? is a form of nominal data; there are two categories: those who do live in university accommodation and those who don’t. Nominal data are not only binary (or dichotomous) data, that is, data where there are only two possible answers. The answer to the question How do you travel to the university? is also nominal data.
