ABSTRACT

About 15 years ago, a young client said to me: “You have it all wrong, Gary, I am not gay, I am transgender. I may have the biological body of a male, but inside, I am a woman. I am heterosexual, and I am a female.” So said my 17-year-old client to me one day, and I thought after he told me this, “You are nuts. If you have a penis, then you are a male, and no matter what you’d like to be, or see yourself as, you are a male.” How ignorant and how uninformed I was about transgender persons. I didn’t realize that, as activist Riki Anne Wilchins said (Goldberg, 1999, p. B2), “it’s not about what’s between my legs.”
