ABSTRACT

Introduction Many subjects no longer include exams as part of the assessment. Academics increasingly value what is referred to as ‘authentic assessment’ which more closely reflects the situations in which we find ourselves in workplaces. Having said that, exams are still used in many courses. Exams allow us as students to show what we know and understand about the topics we have studied. While it is possible for a student to submit an assignment which s/he hasn’t written, exams are organised such that it’s likely that the exam answers are the student’s own work. Almost all exams are invigilated (supervised) and if the invigilator doesn’t know the students, students will be asked to show photo identification to prove their identity.
