ABSTRACT

The previous chapter dealt with issues related to parental involvement. Epstein (1995) describes a typology of parental involvement that includes six categories: parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaboration with the community. This chapter looks at the category of learning at home, which includes family literacy among other activities. According to Epstein (1987), learning at home is the type of parental involvement that contributes the most to school achievement.
