But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled. ... For negatively, it is spread abroad that evangelical approaches to faith and to Scripture can be naive, literalistic, harsh, given to excessive certainty, and that there is no reasoning either in them or with them. And critics with an ear for the prophets could say, ‘Do not trust in these deceptive words: “This is the Scripture of the Lord, the Scripture of the Lord, the Scripture of the Lord.”’ The implied shock should be worthy of Jeremiah’s temple sermon (cf. Jer. 7:4).
