ABSTRACT

Adam Boardman is a thirty-seven-year-old schoolteacher in San Francisco who has been working out for five years. When asked if he identifies with any of the other subcultures (bear, circuit, athlete, etc.) he states: “I’m just a regular guy, I don’t fit neatly into any of these categories.” When asked why he works out and goes to the gym, Adam says, “Probably the most obvious reason would be that as a gay man there’s a certain amount of drive to look your best and to stay looking good as you get older.”1
