ABSTRACT

Much social-scientific research in sport acquires its direction from its distinctive epistemological context. As we saw (chapter 2), the methods appropriately used in one’s research are reciprocally related to what questions that research can address, structured as the answers to questions posed – at least, for qualitative research into social matters. Or, as I say, reflecting this question-and-answer structure, research is erotetic. Less commonly noted is that this fact is fundamental to the identification of central features of qualitative research here, by locating the features of the questions raised.
