ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the rise and widespread adoption of commercial retail developments across urban areas in the UK since the 1950s, from refurbished high streets, through to small-scale city centre malls, and more recently to large-scale mega-projects incorporating a variety of uses. This chapter will draw upon historic and contemporary examples from across the UK and throughout the urban hierarchy.
