ABSTRACT

I n this section, several authors explore experiences that are related to one’s sense of safety in the world and in relationships with others. These losses affect how we view the world and the people who share that world with us. Most individuals grow up with the sense that the world is basically a safe place and that people are generally well-meaning and trustworthy. The experience of the loss of one’s sense of safety in the world or of others in our world with whom we have associated feeling safe can result in a signicant assault on previously held assumptions about the world and others.
