ABSTRACT

W hen I began to explore the topic of the ending of intimate relationships, I found a plethora of literature and popular readings. Indeed, this loss is probably one of the most common and deeply distressing experiences that individuals in our society endure. This chapter discusses the layers of loss that occur when one loses an intimate partner through separation or divorce. I have also identied areas of social change that I believe give insight into this experience, which might provide a framework for supporting individuals who experience a true loss where something has indeed died but there is no funeral or wake.
