ABSTRACT

Social workers cannot not do social casework (discuss). This blend of individual help, taking account of the life histories of clients, their current problems, both psychological and practical, and their family and community circumstances, is just in the nature of the job. The phrase is rarely heard today though (perhaps because it does not contain the word ‘management’). Nevertheless, it long described the essence of what social workers did – they worked with people and their problems (cases), and they still do.
