ABSTRACT

This section draws on the mathematics education project ‘Keeping open the door to mathematically demanding programmes in further and higher education (F&HE)’. It focused on teaching and learning in the early part of post-compulsory, pre-university mathematics programmes (so-called AS levels in the sixth form and FE sector) – this is when students who are mostly on a trajectory towards higher education (HE) make key decisions about whether to drop maths or not, and hence whether to keep open options for mathematically demanding subjects such as science and technology in HE.
