ABSTRACT

Transactional analysts commonly audio record sessions with clients, particularly trainee transactional analysts, who are seeking to obtain audio recordings suitable for presenting in the Certi®ed Transactional Analyst examination. Listening to audio recordings of sessions is often fruitful in enabling the therapist to notice patterns of language and how they are making their interventions, information which they can use to considerably sharpen up their skills. For example, a frequent mistake of beginning therapists is talking too much, or making long interventions. Listening to audio recordings will help to make such errors apparent. Systematic use of audio recordings in personal re¯ection and self-supervision, and also in individual and group supervision can result in the therapist considerably sharpening their skills, and also developing the capacity to re¯ect in action, as well as re¯ect on action (SchoÈn, 1983).
