ABSTRACT

Introduction Many Iranian filmmakers have explored post-revolution social/political issues in films which are commonly referred to as ‘social films’. These issues range from social justice to the place of the clergy in the post-revolution society. As mentioned in Chapter 2, some reformists like Dad particularly encouraged the making of ‘social films’ with financial incentives. Nevertheless, there has been much adverse reaction to these films and their filmmakers by conservative authorities in the establishment. Often as a result of such reactions, many ‘social films’ have become controversial. In this chapter, I examine the political aspects of these films.
