ABSTRACT

Ricky’s hair, dyed jet black, hangs flat-ironed straight over his right eye and covers half his face. It takes him 45 minutes each morning to get it just right. Marlon’s hair is neatly braided into tight cornrows. It is no fuss, low maintenance for a month at a time. There is an old saying that clothes make the man. This may be true, but it is definitely hair that makes the young man. It is their social signature. It says much about where they fit in-or hope to fit in-socially and how they see themselves.
