ABSTRACT

As soon as the Warfield docked Royal Army Medical Corps doctors took over the medical arrangements and evacuated the casualties and sick with efficiency and dispatch. Although the Foreign Secretary intended the ship be returned to France, and the French Government sought her return, even if she was no longer capable of carrying the passengers, the condition of her hull did not permit this. The remainder of the passengers were transhipped to HM Transports Ocean Vigour, Runnymead Park and Empire Rival by 0600 the following day. This was a quick and efficient means of finally denying them access and removing them from Palestine, but it meant that they could only be disembarked at a place which either suited them or where the authorities ashore would countenance the use of force.
