ABSTRACT

Interestingly, no athlete can be 100% fit in all characteristics of physiology at the same time (Sands, 1994a; Sands et al., 2001b). The body naturally economizes its adaptations to the demands that are imposed on it by training and performance. In fact, this economic adaptation has an acronym that accompanies it: SAID – specific adaptations to imposed demands. SAID means that the body will adapt to the demands made on it, no more and no less. A corollary to the SAID principle is that training must provide the athlete’s body with an ‘unambiguous message’ of what you want the body to become.
