ABSTRACT

Confessions is ultimately a love story written to arouse the reader to fall in love with God. Written over sixteen centuries ago by an African rhetorician turned doctor of the church, the words of Augustine’s love for God and God’s love for him are still inspiring and alluring. As best as he is able Augustine lays his own heart open for the reader. He bares his desires, both illicit and sacred, and tells his virtues and vices. In trying to see and explain himself clearly he attempts to see and explain the divine lover who first loved him. As he writes he hopes to ignite in each reader a flaming passion for God who is Truth, Light, Health, Wealth, Goodness, and Delight.
