ABSTRACT

In Cantos XI and XII of Dante’s Paradiso, the Dominican Thomas Aquinas sings the praises of the Franciscans, and the Franciscan Bonaventure lauds the Dominicans. Dante places Thomas and Bonaventure in the Heaven of the Sun, a dazzling fiery world of light, dance, and song, reflecting the beauty and wisdom of God. Bonaventure’s historical existence was quite different, marked by conflict and challenge.
