ABSTRACT

Mysticism: A Study of the Nature and Development of Man’s Spiritual Consciousness appeared in 1911, published by Methuen and Company, a major London publishing house. It was an immediate success. Widely reviewed, new editions continued to be made, twelve in all. Until the late 1970s this 500-page book served as the best single introduction in English to the subject of mysticism, a research tool for scholars and a survey for the general reader. Based on more than one thousand sources, the book was also eminently accessible, full of apt quotations and written with an energy and elegance that engaged the reader. It has continued in print since its original publication and can be found on the shelves of university and community libraries throughout the Anglophone world.
