ABSTRACT

Demography is a distinct discipline that in many settings has been closely linked to economics, other social sciences, and some parts of biology and statistics. It traces its theoretical origins back to the ancient world, and its quantitative roots go back to the seventeenth century at least. In its modern form the focus of demography has been upon human populations in terms of their size, composition, and change, with three fundamental demographic drivers: fertility, mortality, and migration (both internal and international).
