ABSTRACT
The Danish gymnastics teacher Niels Bukh (1880-1950) 1 was probably the best-internationallv-known Dane of the 1930s. From 1912 onwards he was involved in virtually all the Olympic Games and was a regular contributor to world expositions. As early as the 1920s he had successfully promoted Danish culture by travelling each summer to various European countries and in 1923 and 1926 he visited the United States. The culmination of his personal fame came with his world tour in 1931. One outcome was the adoption of his gymnastics system in Japan, where it can still be found today. For the remainder of the 1930s he travelled with unabated energy and embarked on tours to two new continents — South America in 1938 and South Africa in 1939.
