ABSTRACT

The meaning of Czech history and the question of the Czech identity arose in the Czech national revival of the mid-nineteenth century and have filled Czech intellectual debate since. Today, Czech doctoral students in the social sciences and philosophy prepare for comprehensive exams on the works of František Palacký and Tomáš Masaryk. Bookshops carry titles by political thinkers and activists such as Petr Pithart, asking ‘After 1989: Who Are We?’,2 and a television series is devoted to examining the nature of Czech national identity.
