ABSTRACT

It is generally accepted today that most solids emit low-level seismic signals when they are stressed or deformed. A variety of terms, including acoustic emission, microseismic activity, seism-acoustic activity, subaudible noise, roof and rock talk, elastic shocks, elastic radiation, stress wave analysis technique (SWAT), and micro-earthquake activity are utilized by various disciplines to denote this phenomenon. It will be referred to throughout this text, however, as acoustic emission/microseismic (AE/MS) activity.
