ABSTRACT

Energy from an AE/MS source (seismic source) propagates outward from the source in the form of an elastic stress wave. These waves may be detected by surface or subsurface transducers which sense the particle motion associated with the elastic wave. Figure 2.1 illustrates a highly simplified field case where the medium is assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous and continuous. Depending on the source mechanism and the boundary conditions, energy may be transmitted in the form of plane, cylindrical or spherical waves.
