ABSTRACT
The distrust and hatred that begets violence and war between peoples does not spring suddenly and wholly formed from a culture. It is nurtured and rationalized in the everyday discussion and interpretation of political and social events deemed newsworthy by that culture. In modern society, the interpretations expressed in the elite newspapers carry great weight in influencing opinion about every aspect of society that is reported on, especially during times of conflict and war.
