ABSTRACT

The description of the Rack and Pinion industry in this chapter concludes the presentation of the three industries that are the focus of this book. The purpose of the chapter, as with the two previous chapters, is to determine which contexts of competition have emerged during the existence of the Rack and Pinion industry. The history of the industry reveals three phases, determinable by two distinct changes in the style of competition, which occurred during the first ten years in the industry’s history. Since that time, which is now more than thirty years ago, the context of competition has been asymmetric and passive. Again, it is this last phase of the industry that is concentrated on in the descriptions of competitive play in the Rack and Pinion industry, though the conditions of the 1980s are emphasised. The analysis of this industry therefore provides important insight and knowledge about that context of competition, not exhibited by the previous two industries.
