ABSTRACT

International peace operations are neither an invention of the UM nor of the late twentieth century, They developed gradually in the nineteenth century, as combined efforts of the European powers to preserve stability in fringe regions, particularly the crumbling Ottoman Empire, Shown are the Austro-Hungarian contingent of the 87th Infantry Regiment in new tropical uniforms for the Crete operation 1897–98 (Fig. 1 ) and the German Marines who participated in the international force sent to northern Albania in 1913–14 (Fig. 2).
