ABSTRACT

This book proffers a lavish array. Like some of the subjects they treat, the essays collected here draw their materials from various parts of Europe and touch on many parts of the globe. Including discussions of a variety of disciplines, they offer an expanded view of early modern history, and at the same time enrich earlier interpretations, especially of the history of science and the history of art. Yet while they intrigue us with fascinating intellectual wares, these essays also invite us to consider further some of the larger questions that they raise. This epilogue responds to some of the selection’s stimuli. 1
