ABSTRACT

It should be noted, however, the lack of access to money and the world of commodities does not mean that all commodities are equally desired. Rather, as Maclean (1994) has observed, one particular commodity may be treated as a metonym of the world of commodities and money (including the road along which their access becomes possible). In the case to be described here, access to the world of comodities through one metonymic example is also envisioned as gaining access to a realm of lost Fuyuge artefacts and capacities. The link with the former (money creating commodities) is part of a project of regaining that of the latter (ancestrally lost artefacts and capacities). Each, as we shall see, is part of a strategy of sustaining a project of cosmological centredness.3
