Cognitive psychology has traditionally divided the world of auditory events into two distinct categories: speech sounds and non-speech sounds. Speech sounds form a world within a world, a closed set with its own unique indirect mode of processing in which the
relationship between the acoustic properties of the stimulus and the emergent percept is opaque (Liberman, Cooper, Shankweiler, Studdert-Kennedy, 1967).
