ABSTRACT

Racism in Football: A Victim’s Perspective

Richie Moran

Richie Moran reflects on his career as a professional footballer, a career largely curtailed by the racism he faced. Moran charts the forms of racism he experienced, including verbal and physical abuse, and the prejudice and discrimination he encountered. These personal experiences are discussed within the context of the development of recent anti-racist initiatives within the game, and it is argued that, despite some successes, there is still a long way to go in the quest to rid football of racist attitudes.
