ABSTRACT
Before I begin this intellectual exercise, I would like to ask you to stand for one minute and to reflect silently on the people whom you know who are living with HIV or AIDS. I suspect that, like me, most of you are here today because of your concern for loved ones for whom this epidemic is a personal ordeal [moment of silence].
