When he accepted the nomination to the Caucusus in 1845, Vorontsov did it not without hesitation. After all, he was then 63 years old and not in the best of health. 1 Vorontsov was also well aware that the emperor did not particularly trust and like him. He therefore did not expect to stay for more than a few years in this post, and hoped to subdue Daghestan and Chechnia before retiring.
